I met my husband before I returned to school to finish my degree. He proposed to me in March of 2005 by hanging a red, heart-shaped tag on his cat's collar (along with a ring) that stated "I love you, will you marry me?" Very original. We didn't have much money and neither wanted, nor could afford a huge ceremony. A classmate at UNM introduced me to the man who did our ceremony, Chris, who plays Santa Claus and does weddings. Very cool guy.
Neither my husband nor myself are religious, so we both agreed on a secular ceremony....but where to have it?
We had it at the Duck Pond in May 2005. The guest list included our parents, my hubby's grandmother, Chris, and two witnesses. My husband and I wrote our own ceremony, and insisted that everyone wear shorts, Hawaiian shirts, and sandals. After the ceremony we fed goldfish crackers to the fish in the Duck Pond.
Wedding Service- $100
Use of Duck Pond-$0
Goldfish crackers-$3
Memories- Priceless!

My husband and I lived in Hokona Hall when we met at UNM. During the early 1970s, most of the students we knew didn't "date." We hung around together, went to concerts as a group, and played cards in the dorm. So, Jim and I never dated but on January 31, 1975 we were married. Jim tries to claim we had one date because he and I went to a movie alone, but the truth was that no one else in the group wanted to see that particular movie. Jim graduated in May 1973 and returned to California but wrote to me and remained in contact through friends. I graduated in May 1974 and returned to New Jersey while deciding what to do next. Over Thanksgiving in 1974 I returned to Albuquerque and, without my knowing it, Jim was also coming to New Mexico for the holiday. We saw each other again. Spent a romantic weekend together and were married two months later. We just celebrated our 32nd anniversary.

Wendy and I had dated for a while as undergraduates at UNM, but she said she wasn't ready for a serious relationship and we broke up. We graduated. Two years later I was in UNM medical school and Wendy was a French lit grad student. We were "introduced" on a blind date at Hippo Ice Cream & coffee shop across Central from campus. I'll never forget that moment. We both felt it was just fated to be. We've been married now for almost 28 years (since 1979, in the chapel on campus).
