Behind the Howl: An Interview with Lobos Louie and Lucy

The Howler was able to secure an interview with UNM mascots Lobos Louie and Lucy (unrelated), during a rare lull in their schedule.

Howler: How did you two meet?

Lobo Lucy: I met Louie in college. He’s a few years older than I am, and was a regular Big Wolf on Campus when I arrived.

Lobo Louie: You could tell Lucy needed a mentor that first year. Coming from a Lobo family, she was a big fan of Lobo sports. I invited her to a few games and was impressed by her howl. We’ve been cheering together ever since.

Lobo Lucy: I’d like your readers to know, because people always ask, that Louie and I are great friends and colleagues, but nothing more. We put our working relationship first.

Lobo Louie: We didn’t become the official UNM mascots until the live lobo retired. He got a little cranky towards the end, so UNM thought it would be better to have a mascot who was a little more approachable.

Lobo Lucy: Of course, we’re still required to get our shots, but, really!

Howler: What is your favorite cheer?

Lobos Louie and Lucy (together): Everyone’s a Lobo! Woof! Woof! Woof!

Lobo Louie: We’ve been saying that one since we were pups, and now it’s the theme for Homecoming 2007, September 25-29.

Lobo Lucy: We’re so flattered!

Howler: What is your favorite sport?

Lobo Louie: **No response.**

Lobo Lucy: Oh, Louie! Tell them why! The fur really flies when we discuss this, so we try not to take a stand. I will tell you, though, that we’re thrilled to watch the popularity of the Lady Lobos grow.

Howler: What is your favorite color?

Lobo Lucy: Oh, that’s easy! Cherry red, of course! …and silver.

Lobo Louie: In fact, this fall we’re going to Paint the Town Red! Everyone (who’s a Lobo) will wear red to all the games. The stadium, the pit—everyplace will scream red! It will be awesome!

Lobo Lucy: We’ve already done all our shopping at Lobo Store. We wanted to make sure they didn’t run out of our sizes.

Howler: What is your favorite meal?

Lobo Louie: Well, it may not be PC, but we’re always ready to wrassle up an Aggie. In fact, we’re licking our chops over the Rio Grande Rivalry that UNM and NMSU have begun this year.

Howler: So, what’s your schedule look like this year, and where can we get tickets?

Lobo Louie: It’s going to be wild. All of the sports are looking great. Lucy and I are really excited.

Lobo Lucy: You should get your tickets at the Lobo website now!

Howler: Tell us what it means to you to be a Lobo.

Lobo Lucy: It is such an honor. I mean, to be both a lobo and a Lobo! Who ever knew?

Lobo Louie: We are very proud to be Lobos. I think it was our life’s calling. Lobo athletes are great humans, and we are thrilled to support them.
