JFK at UNM

Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy visited UNM on November 3, 1960, five days before his election as president. According to the Daily Lobo, on the day of his visit, students took a mock poll, and elected Richard Nixon. Photo courtesy UNM Archives.

Robert F. Kennedy visited UNM on April 1, 1968. He told the gathered crowd that he preferred negotiated peace to withdrawal from Viet Nam. Bobby Kennedy was assassinated on June 6, 1968. The yearbook published in 1969 commemorated his visit with this quote: "Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of the world.
