University Commencement 2006
Commencement is the main UNM graduation ceremony for all schools, colleges, and departments to be held on Saturday, May 13 at 9 a.m. at the Pit. Some schools, colleges, and departments also hold convocations for their graduates.

Immediately after the university commencement ceremony, everyone is invited to a reception under the tent in the northeast corner of the Pit parking lot. The reception is proudly sponsored by Acting President Harris and the Alumni Association.

We’re making special efforts to welcome new grads to the alumni community with mailings, a Commencement Reception, and a Young Alumni Association Social. Please come by and say hello! We want to keep in touch! Please tell us where we can reach you after graduation and we’ll send you a mini-diploma.

  • Alumni Benefits for New Grads

NelNet Loan Consolidation :: UNM Alumni Association Among the many benefits available to all UNM alumni, we offer a few especially useful to new alumni. A Nelnet federal
student loan consolidation can bring all of your federal student loans into a single new loan, for easier management and possibly lower payments. Temporary health insurance can help until you get that first job. You are also eligible for other insurance programs, including auto, home, and renters.

    Famous Honorary Alumni
As UNM alumni, we stand in pretty illustrious company. As well as being the nicest group of people we’ve ever met, our alumni family boasts successful academics, professionals, and public servants from all walks of life. This year, UNM will award honorary degrees to former UNM President John Perovich, former US Congressman Manuel Lujan, Jr., and self-taught Jicarilla linguist Wilhelmina Phone.

The distinguished individuals who have received honorary degrees from UNM include a familiar name or two—like Georgia O’Keefe and poet and historian Fray Angelico Chavez. Click below to learn more.

    You Know You’re a UNM Alum When…
We’ve put together a light-hearted list of the top 48 things you must do to graduate from UNM. “Eat a Frontier Roll” tops the list, of course! Check out our list and send your additions to alumni@unm.edu.

Campus Events to Bring You Back
Can’t remember the last time you visited campus to take a class, attend a concert, or meet a friend for coffee? Let us tempt you back with just one of the many standout events scheduled this spring. UNM Libraries is hosting its Second Annual "Tables of Content" fundraiser on May 21. The evening will bring together notable artists, writers, scholars, and politicians from diverse fields to lead engaging discussions, accompanied by a gourmet meal.

    UNM Appointments
We have big news to share about several top-level UNM appointments recently approved by the UNM Board of Regents. These successful individuals will help keep UNM focused on our commitments to our students, faculty, staff, and the New Mexico community.

University of New Mexico regents have named a three-person management leadership team to serve on an interim basis until a permanent president is named in the spring of 2007:
    • David Harris, newly appointed acting president and chief operating officer
    • Reed Dasenbrock, newly appointed provost and executive vice president for academic affairs
    • Paul Roth, MD, executive vice president for health sciences
Also, Paul Krebs will serve as UNM's 12th director of athletics. He was formerly athletics director at Bowling Green State University.

    All Heard at Budget Summit
The recent University Budget Summit, held March 31 at the SUB, gave all interested parties an opportunity to have their voice heard on budget priorities. After an introduction by University administration members, students, faculty, staff, and alumni representatives offered their perspectives.

The UNM Board of Regents voted on the UNM Budget on April 11 at their regular monthly meeting. They decided to raise tuition 6.1 percent.

    2006 Legislative Wrap-up for UNM

Thank you again to everyone who helped with our 2006 Lobos for Legislation efforts. The legislative session has ended. The Governor has taken action and we can now share the results of UNM's legislative agenda.

The consensus is that UNM received most of the assistance requested from the New Mexico State Legislature. Many legislators focused on UNM's priorities and we thank them for their efforts.

Click below to review a summary of UNM-directed legislative accomplishments. Also, we've included a detailed chart showing funding granted by the Legislature and actions signed or vetoed by the Governor. If you have questions, please feel free to call Kim Feldman at (505) 277-9092.

    Star Scholars Success
Our spring Star Scholars receptions were once again a huge success, thanks to our fantastic alumni volunteers. Thank you for helping UNM attract New Mexico’s brightest students!

These annual receptions recognize the high-achieving New Mexico high school juniors who are in the top 10 percent of their class. Students heard presentations on the importance of a college education, UNM's programs, what it's like to be a UNM student, and scholarship opportunities.

We’d also like to thank the tireless alumni who once again helped make UNM shine at college fairs around the country. We couldn’t do it without you!

    Summer Fun for Kids
The UNM Athletics and Recreational Services departments as well as UNM Continuing Education have a whole lot of active summer fun planned for your kids.

    Go Lobos! Ski Team Shines
The University of New Mexico ski team equaled its second best finish in school history with a second place showing at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Steamboat Springs last month. Eight UNM student-athletes earned All-American honors, including a pair of women's Nordic skiers who finished in the top-10 in the freestyle races.

These accomplishments are even more outstanding considering the paucity of snowfall in the Sandias this past winter. Student-athletes took on extra travel time to train in Taos and elsewhere.

    Continuing Education—Explore New Mexico
UNM Continuing Education Get to know the real New Mexico with Continuing Ed’s “The Story of New Mexico” Travel and Lecture Series program. You’ll get the “inside story”
about commerce and culture on Santa Fe Trail, the role animals have played in western American literature, how certain plants have been used to landscape New Mexico for over 1,000 years, and more! Or enjoy a tour of a local winery, discover the many pueblos of northern New Mexico, or take in a performance at the world famous Santa Fe Opera. Our field trips are an easy way to experience some of New Mexico’s most treasured places and events.

UNM Dance Alumni Reunion May 5-7
A gala weekend of performance and celebration will honor Dance Professor Judith Bennahum’s 31 years of teaching at UNM and upcoming retirement.

Friends of Dance, the Alumni Association, and the College of Fine Arts Development Office helped fund the weekend events. For more information, contact Sarah Waff at (505) 272-3710 or Dancerpie@aol.com.
