In last month's Howl Back poll, we
asked, "Who wrote the Territorial
Act establishing the University
of New Mexico on February 28,
1889"
About 40% of respondents correctly
chose Bernard S. Rodey. The desk
at which Rodey is said to have
written the papers to establish the
University is now in Hodgin Hall.
Fifty-eight percent of you were
thrown off the track by a familiar
name and incorrectly chose Charles
E. Hodgin. |

Built in 1976 as part of the
Smith
Plaza campus beautification
project, the Duck Pond
replaced a men's dorm, Yatoka,
on the west end, a parking
lot
where the water stands today,
and a street that ran in front
of
the library.

The lobo in
Tight Grove at the southwest corner
of the main campus reminds those who enter of UNM's heritage. Tight
Grove honors the university's third president, William
Tight (1901-1909), who set the direction for UNM's southwestern
architecture and changed Hodgin
Hall (just visible in the right hand corner of the photograph)
from red brick to stucco. |

New Parking Structure
Visiting campus just got easier and more welcoming
for prospective students, guests and alums! The new UNM visitor parking
structure is now open for business after a yearlong construction process.
Located on the former Johnson Center-Popejoy Hall parking lot, the structure
adds 400 spaces on six levels. The adjacent new Welcome Center office
and Internet Cafe should be open by this summer.
Out of This World Job for UNM
Alum
As they roam the surface
of Mars, the NASA rovers “Spirit” and “Opportunity”
are sending back tantalizing clues about life on our closest planetary
neighbor. Guiding their every move are teams of dedicated scientists and
engineers, including UNM alum Eddie Tunstel. His team is responsible for
the robotic arm functions that are an essential part of the rovers’
mission.
Award
Recipients Honored
UNM alumni are an impressive lot. Four were
singled out for their outstanding achievements at the annual Alumni Association
Awards Dinner this spring.

alumni got a feel for New Mexico politics at a reception honoring the
state's Congressional delegation. While there, they met university VIP's
as well.
First “Dinner for 12 Strangers”
Events Serve Up Friendship
“Dinner for 12 Strangers” is a new
program organized by the UNM Alumni Association that brings 12 students,
faculty, and alums together for an evening of conversation and great food.
The first two dinners were smash successes with fantastic response from
alums and faculty wanting to get involved. Future events are already being
scheduled for the rest of the year.
Lobos for Legislation—Get
Involved
The University of New Mexico Alumni Association
would like to extend its thanks to all alums and friends who helped champion
higher education priorities for the 2004 legislative session. A very special
thank you to all members of the 46th Legislature and Governor Bill Richardson
for their support of higher education in the state of New Mexico.
Lobo Basketball Looks Back and
Ahead
Lobo basketball is over for the season, but
the Ladies remain winners. Besides setting national records for drawing
a crowd, the Lobo women tied with Utah for best Conference record and
won the MWC championship in Denver. Their final game took place in the
Pit: an NCAA Tournament loss to the Florida Gators. The Lobo men had mixed
reviews, going 14-14 overall, and 14-4 overall at home.
