Last issue, we asked you to name
UNM’s original school colors. We
caught you on this one—only 20
percent knew that the correct
answer is black and gold. The
familiar cherry and silver colors
were adopted in 1897.

While some have claimed that
there was another UNM before
our fair institution was founded
in Albuquerque, it’s not the
case. There was a school in
Santa Fe called the "University
of New Mexico," but it existed
before the Territorial Act was
written that created this UNM
in 1889. The schools were not
related, ever.

Zimmerman…not. Scholes…not. The official UNM logo, adopted in 1989, depicts Mesa Vista tower. Mesa Vista Hall, once known as the 400-man dorm, was built in 1950 to help accommodate the post-war student-population boom. Designed by John Gaw Meem—Hugo Zehner and Associates, the building has accommodated academic and student offices since 1970.

Smooth Transition Planned After Caldera Resignation
On January 25, the UNM Board of Regents and President Caldera announced that Caldera will step down as president, by mutual agreement. He is currently on a leave of absence, after which he will join the faculty of the school of law as a tenured professor.
The key focus for all parties is to ensure a smooth transition of leadership and continued forward momentum on key university initiatives, such as the upcoming March 31 Budget Summit.
UNM Executive Vice President for Administration David Harris has been named as acting president. The regents will discuss naming an interim president with academic expertise in the near future.
We thank President Caldera for his service and wish him all the best in future endeavors.
Lobos for Legislation—Session Wrap-up
This grassroots legislative advocacy network of more than 400 UNM alumni serves as a pipeline of information to alumni and friends of the university on legislative matters.
The 2006 Legislative session came to a successful conclusion last month. As of press time, this year’s allocations are awaiting Governor Richardson’s signature. Thank you to each and every one of you who called, wrote, and campaigned for UNM’s future.
Request for Board Nominations
The UNM Alumni Association is soliciting nominations for open positions on the Board of Directors. The dedicated volunteer members of this governing board help ensure that your alumni association stays strong, relevant and effective. Please consider nominating yourself or a candidate who you think would be an effective member of this group. We’re seeking both in-state and out-of-state representatives.
Please send an e-mail to executive director Karen Abraham at kabraham@unm.edu, by May 1, describing why the nominee would be a good board member.
UNM Alumni Awards Nominations
The University of New Mexico Alumni Association gives a number of awards to individuals in recognition of outstanding accomplishments. You can submit a nomination using our Online Nomination Form. Zia Award nominations, for in-state residents, are due May 1. All other nominations are due November 1.
Go Lobos! Softball, Baseball, Kids Camps
The hard-driving softball team is ready for action. Eighteen players will fill a brand new facility at Lobo Field under 4-year head coach Kim Newbern. The team posted a 1-4 record during a trip to Las Vegas to compete in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by MWC member UNLV. The team is currently riding a 7 game winning streak to improve their record to 9-12.
The Lobo baseball team, under head coach Rich Alday, launched the 2006 season with a 5-3 win over New Mexico State, their first season-opening win since 2003. Their record stands at 13-4 as of press time, with lots more to come.
Sign up now for kids spring break and team baseball camps! The camps help kids ages 6-18 learn the fundamentals from Lobo coaching staff as well as numerous current and former players.
MWC Events
The men's and women's Mountain West Basketball Tournament will take place at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado from March 7-11. Will you be there?
The Lobo Club and UNM Alumni will host pre-game receptions in the Denver Post Newsroom. Admission is free and open to all Lobo fans. Enjoy drinks, snacks and the company of fellow Lobos before the big games.
For additional information contact the Alumni Office at 505-277-5808, or 800-258-6866.
Track & Field Alumni Group Founded
Perhaps the most exceptional group of athletes ever to compete in any sport at UNM were on legendary coach Hugh Hackett's track and field teams of the 1960s.
A large group of Lobo legends from that era, including coach Hackett and former national champions Adolph Plummer and Art Baxter, reunited in Albuquerque on January 20 for a memorable evening spent sharing memories and reaffirming a commitment to New Mexico track and field excellence. That night, reunion organizer Rene Matison, a two-time All-American at UNM, announced the founding of the Lobo Track and Field Alumni Club.
Senior Day Success
This first annual Senior Day conference was a huge success, thanks to the generous contributions on the part of our many alumni and Trailblazer volunteers. Over 150 seniors attended 15 breakout sessions and the keynote speech by Jim Hinton, '81 BA, CEO of Presbyterian Healthcare.
The full-day program on February 17 included workshops to help current seniors prepare for life after college (and their new role as UNM alumni!).
Star Scholars
Support New Mexico's star students in your area! UNM and the Alumni Association will recognize the achievements of high school juniors in the top 10 percent of their class at receptions across the state. You're invited to attend!
Community Service–Spring Storm 2006
Spring Storm 2006 is a campus-wide, one-day community service event held this year on April 22. Hundreds of UNM students, alumni, staff and faculty volunteers will give back to Albuquerque by completing projects from painting and landscaping to elderly visitation and youth education.
The day includes a kick-off breakfast, sack lunches (on the job), and a celebration barbecue after the work is done.
More information, including sign-up sheets, is available on The Community Experience web site.
Continuing Education—Writers Conference
 |
Kick start your writing career by attending Continuing Education at UNM’s Writers Conference: From Start
|
to Sales. Beginning writers will hear an editor and veteran writer reveal ways to sell to magazines. Aspiring writers of novels will hear two prolific novelists show you how to plot your book. Two editors and two agents looking for manuscripts tell you what they are looking for, and how to contact them after the conference.
The full-day conference will be held on Saturday, April 29 at the Continuing Education Conference Center.
Happy Anniversaries!
|
This issue we’d like to wish a happy 40th anniversary to many of UNM’s community of fraternities and sororities, plus observe the 50th anniversary of both the Hokona dorm and our beloved observatory. |
