UNM Celebrates Black History Month
Black History Month is one to celebrate
at UNM, with the special 40th anniversary commemoration of the
Black Panther Party. The Huey P. Newton Foundation, honoring the
legacy of the Black Panther Party, and the University of New Mexico
African American Studies Program is honored to host this celebration.
Events planned include the UNM Black History Month 20th anniversary “Kickoff
Brunch,” an impressive roster of distinguished speakers,
panel discussions, book signings, film screenings, and a formal
benefit gala.
Plus, please click below to read about
the accomplishments of two of UNM's African-American alumni. Theodore
Jones, Albuquerque's first African-American firefighter, began a
career in civil service after graduating on the dean's list in 1975
with a bachelor's degree in political science. Jane Powdrell-Culbert,
district 44 state representative from Corrales, is the first African
American ever elected on the state Republican ticket. She brings what
seems like several lifetimes of career experience to her role as a
legislator, including time as a flight attendant, advertising executive,
and NRA representative.
Lobos for Legislation—You Can Help
Here's a New Year’s resolution suggestion
that will really make a difference: help us make sure that your elected
representatives know how much UNM and higher education mean to you. Share
your story, your passion, and your concern with New Mexico state legislators
and leaders. Get involved with Lobos for Legislation.
This grassroots legislative advocacy network
of more than 400 UNM alumni serves as a pipeline
of information to alumni
and friends of the university on legislative matters. See our 2006 Legislative
Priorities below for what we’re focusing on this year.
There are lots of ways you can positively affect
the future of higher education in New Mexico—with calls, letters, and
hands-on advocacy. Follow these links below to learn more. Thank you!
UNM Alumni Awards Presented
The University of New Mexico Alumni Association’s
annual awards recognize outstanding service and accomplishments from
distinguished alumni and faculty. This year’s awards will be
presented at a dinner on February 2, at the Hotel Albuquerque at
Old Town, to Miguel Gandert, Eric M. Pillmore, John P. Salazar, and
David Stuart.
Seniors Learn to Be Grads
This year the UNM Alumni Association is hosting the first annual
Senior Day Conference. The full-day program on February 17 includes
workshops to help current seniors prepare for life after college
(not to mention their new role as UNM alumni!), including career
services, etiquette training, and financial planning.
As is true for many of our Alumni programs,
this conference wouldn’t
be possible without the assistance of our dedicated Trailblazers.
These committed students volunteer their time for Alumni, University,
and community events. This year, the Trailblazers are hosting the
district conference for the Association of Student
Advancement Programs.
New SAAP Home Breaks Ground
The long-awaited ground-breaking for the
new George
Clayton Pearl School of Architecture and Planning building
took place on November 21, 2005. Construction is now underway and
is expected to be complete next year. This 64,000 square foot facility
will be located immediately east of the UNM Bookstore, on the north
side of Central Avenue, and also house the Fine Arts and Design Library.
UNM Regents Support TVI Bond Issue
On January 10, the UNM Board of Regents endorsed a bond issue for which TVI, Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute, is seeking voter approval. This $60 million bond issue would fund major capital improvement projects in all quadrants of the district without increasing taxes. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day, February 7. All registered voters living in the TVI district are urged to consider voting in favor of this issue.
The TVI District includes Bernalillo County and, in Sandoval
County, Corrales and the portion of Rio Rancho generally south
of Northern Boulevard.
Please direct your questions to TVI's
Public Information Office,
505-224-4414.

Go Lobos! Sports Round-Up
It may be cold outside, but the women’s
basketball team is burning up the boards. Currently 12-3, 2-0 MWC,
as of press time, the Lobos are on fire with a 28-game homecourt
conference-winning streak.
After their most successful season in
school history (18-2-3), the men’s soccer team came up one
goal short at the final NCAA Tournament title game. With four Academic
All-Americans, including Hermann Trophy Finalist Jeff Rowland,
and a well-deserved Coach of the Year award for coach Jeremy Fishbein,
every member of the team is a champion in our eyes. Look for an
upcoming Mirage article
on their accomplishments.
Keep cheering all our UNM athletes as they
kick, dribble, run, and swim toward MWC championships. GO LOBOS!
