In last month's Howl Back poll, we
asked, "How many UNM presi-
dents were UNM graduates?"
Half of you knew that three UNM
Alums have served as University
President: Tom Popejoy from
1948-1968, John Perovich
from 1982-1984, and F. Chris
Garcia, who served from 2002-
2003. |

Mr.
Johnson's Gym
Roy W. Johnson, who coached
every sport
at UNM from 1920-59,
wore many
hats. He built the
first grass
football field and
bleachers.
When Johnson
arrived at
UNM in 1920, the gym
was a small
wooden building
where the
walls were out-of-
bounds markers
for basketball
games. Soon,
Johnson oversaw
the construction
of Carlisle Gym
and just
before he retired, the
construction
of the 7,000-seat
Johnson Gymnasium
in 1957.

UNM’s Busy Summer Life
The best part of summer
on campus is the freedom to try something new. Along with students attending
summer classes, UNM also welcomes middle and high school students to campus
for cultural and athletic camps. Everyone can enjoy the free Friday music
concerts on the plaza and lectures featuring luminaries such as Tony Hillerman
and Ursula Le Guin. An impressive series of classes and lectures on folk
healing traditions and curanderismo is sure to be a summer bright
spot. For faculty and staff, summer is a time to perhaps take a class
themselves and prepare for the upcoming year. (Don’t forget the
annual staff picnic to the Rio Grande Zoo.) While we can’t list
everything that’s going on, here’s a list of highlights:
A
New Tradition: Freshman Family Day!
Freshman Family Day is a new UNM event to welcome
incoming students and their families to the University Community. Family
Day recognizes all of our incoming students; introduces them and their
families to our President, administrators, faculty and staff; and celebrates
the essential role of the family in bringing students to this important
day.
It will be held on August 22 with The Freshman Convocation,
a social celebration at the UNM Duck Pond on campus, and the showing of
a movie at sunset on Johnson Field.
LOBOrientation Gets Students Ready
It probably doesn’t seem that long ago
that you arrived on campus with lots of questions and maybe some nervousness.
LOBOrientation is an intense two-day program held weekly from early June
to mid-August for new and transfer freshmen to help them get ready for
college life. During their two days on campus, new students explore opportunities
to get involved in their education, learn about university services and
policies, and register for classes.
Make Homecoming 2004 a Howling Success
Besides marking October 18 - 24, 2004
on your calendar and planning to attend Homecoming 2004, there are lots
of ways you can help make this year’s events the best ever.
- Join
the Homecoming 100 Club (502 K
)
Your donation of $100 or more will help sponsor the University of New
Mexico’s Homecoming celebrations! In thanks, you’ll receive
recognition in Mirage magazine and your choice of a pair of tickets
to the UNM Homecoming football game or a limited edition UNM Homecoming
poster by artist Phil Hulebak.
- Contribute
to the Homecoming Silent Auction
Every year right before the Homecoming game, our silent auction
benefits the UNM Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and programs.
Your donation of prizes or services now will help ensure a great
auction. Last year’s prizes included a trip for two to New
Orleans. Call or e-mail coordinator Susan MacEachen for more information.
Learning for Life—The
Story of New Mexico
This summer Continuing Education is offering
trips and adventures that the whole family can enjoy. Take the kids to
learn about life at Acoma Pueblo, or listen for voices from space at the
Very Large Array. Learn about the mysteries of our natural world as revealed
through petroglyphs and at Chaco Canyon. For trips beyond the New Mexico
border, take in opera and architecture in Los Angeles, or enjoy a once
in a lifetime journey to Peru to see Machu Piccu and its other world-famous
sites. In July, visit some of the exquisite architecture and archaeology
of old Mexico. Plan ahead to walk in the footprints of the old Camino
Real from Mexico in October.
