Alumni Bring New Students Along
We want to say thank you to all our alumni who help us with college fairs and new student events, as well as with generous donations. Your energy, commitment, and enthusiasm are what make the UNM community such a special place.

When prospective college students visit the UNM table at their local College Fair, the friendly face greeting them is most often a dedicated alumni volunteer. Who better than a Lobo to answer their questions and tell them about the UNM experience?

More about College Fair volunteers around the country.

Gifts from alumni, friends, and chapters allow us to offer Alumni Scholarships and assist top UNM students with their academic expenses. Thank you!

Amigo Scholarships help broaden campus diversity by allowing out-of-state students to attend UNM at in-state tuition levels.

Welcoming the Class of 2009
The first day of classes is August 22, but there’s lots going on for new students before then. LOBOrientation and the CEP Summer Orientation Program are already underway on campus.

LOBOrientation helps all new students start their college career on the right foot towards Commencement. Thanks to the alumni speakers who will once again offer their first-hand perspective and tips for success!

For students who can benefit from additional targeted support, the College Enrichment Program (CEP) offers academic advisement, peer mentoring, academic tutoring, career exploration, personal support, and much more. CEP freshmen and their parents have enjoyed orientation lunch in front of Hodgin Hall this summer.

UNM’s newest tradition is Freshman Family Day, an all-day celebration that welcomes incoming students and their families to the University Community. Held this year on August 21, the day includes the Freshman Convocation ceremony (with faculty in full academic regalia), a Duck Pond celebration, and sunset movie screening on Johnson Field.

And of course, we’ll be part of Welcome Back Days, a week of fun-filled activities to kick off the academic year. Please let us know if you can help us serve hot dogs at the lunchtime picnics. We have just a few openings for volunteers.

Welcome to Our New Board Members and President!
At the June 3 Board of Directors meeting, the UNM Alumni Association and Board of Directors had the very special pleasure of thanking all our alumni volunteers for their dedication this year.

A good time was had by all at the “I’m Glad There is You” reception, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it.

The gavel was passed to new Alumni Association Board president, Angie Vachio, '75 MA. In other business, the Board approved the UNM Alumni Association’s Strategic Plan!

Kudos to NM State Senators
Also at this year’s volunteer thank you reception, the Alumni Association and the Lobos for Legislation committee honored New Mexico State Senators Cynthia Nava and Cisco McSorley as the first recipients of their new Higher Education Distinguished Legislator Award. These awards recognize New Mexico legislators who make an extraordinary and exemplary contribution to higher education at the University of New Mexico. A $500 scholarship in each legislator’s name will be awarded to a student from the legislators’ districts.

Athletic Hall of Honor Inductees
UNM Alumni Lettermen's Assoc. - Hall of Honor Congratulations to this year’s Athletic Hall of Honor inductees, who represent excellence in inter-collegiate sports. These hard-playing individuals will be recognized this fall at the UNM Alumni Lettermen’s Association’s annual awards ceremony.
The Lettermen also proudly awarded 16 fifth-year scholarships, the largest number ever.

Lobo Athletes Succeed
Go Lobos! In season wrap-up news, the men's golf team moved up to finish fifth at the NCAA Championships. The women's golf team maintained the program's long-standing tradition of excellence with two tournament wins, a berth in the NCAA Central Regional, and a top-20 ranking all season. Congratulations as well to our three in-state tracksters who represented UNM at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

And over at the rival Rebel camp, we offer congrats to UNM alumnus Dwaine Knight, '70 BBA, for his successful coaching season (finishing 8th at the NCAA championships) with the UNLV men’s golf team.
