SEEMS
EVERYONE'S A CRITIC
Revered architect Frank Lloyd
Wright stirred up a hornets’ nest
when he spoke disparagingly of
UNM’s distinctive style at a 1957
Cultural Series lecture at the
SUB.
Townspeople and
the student
body were instantly up in arms,
and eventually the shock-
headed intellectual became a
member of the elite corps who
have been hanged in effigy at
the University of New Mexico.

UNM Alumni Chapters Are the Heart of
Lobo Spirit
There’s a familiar feel to the Second
Saturday breakfast that’s held each month in Denver. It’s
at “Little Anita’s”—a branch of the Albuquerque
landmark. In addition to this monthly event, Denver-based alumni will
throw a Happy Hour in June, a day at the Rockies (baseball team) in July,
an annual summer picnic and white elephant auction, Mountain West Conference
tournament activities, and other events. Chapter President Gary Repetto,
'67 BS has served on the Alumni Board of
Directors and Alumni Lettermen
Board. He shares the kudos for the chapter’s success with his wife,
Antoinette, and fellow alumni Todd Elston, '78 BABA, Carol Garcia, '88
BA , '01 MAPA , and Ken and Milly Hansen, '55 BSAE and '55 BABA, among
others.

Knowing how important
tastes of home are, the Washington DC group hosts a green chile roast
and taco picnic each September. This year’s well-attended Lobo
Day featured UNM Past President Richard Peck. Chapter
president Larry Harris, |
'64 BABA, keeps the Southwest Spirit alive in
our nation’s capital with the help of fellow alumni, among them Don
Ivers, '63 BA, Lorna Bridenstine, '58 BABA, and Donna Fossum, '71 BA.
These are just two examples of what’s going
on with our chapters around the country. We’re grateful to all the
active members who make these groups such a vital part of the Lobo Spirit.
Soon we’ll welcome chapter leaders to campus for the annual Chapter
Council meeting. In addition to attending workshops on student recruitment,
scholarships, and activities, chapter leaders will have a chance to connect
with university faculty, staff, and fellow dedicated alumni from around
the country.
These are just two examples…

Successes Mark 2004-2005 Academic
Year
Surely, Commencement Day this May was the highlight
of the year for the university’s 1,749 new graduates who received
their bachelor’s degrees and the 876 scholars who received advanced
degrees.
Other university successes include progress on legislative
priorities and a well-attended DC Congressional Reception, hosted by UNM
President Caldera and the UNM Alumni Association.
This high-visibility event brought together over 160 alumni, Congressional
staff, government agency representatives, and friends to discuss issues
of importance to the State and UNM.
Join us in congratulating the recipients of our Alumni
Association scholarships. We could not be prouder of all our Lobo athletes,
who brought home an unprecedented number of personal bests, division wins,
and championships this year.
Looking ahead to the future, the Star Scholars program
honors the top 10 percent of each high school junior class in New Mexico.
Nine recognition receptions were held throughout the state during the
spring. The students and their families were invited for an evening of
information about UNM and scholarship opportunities available to them.

Save the Date: Homecoming 2005
| With
a theme of “Honoring the Past, Building the Future,”
this year’s Homecoming will be bigger and better than ever.
Mark your calendar now and plan to join us on October 3-8,
2005. The Lobos will play the
BYU Cougars (game time to be determined). Look |
 |
forward to the annual Alumni Faculty/Staff Appreciation
luncheon, the Heritage Club Dinner (induction of the Class of 1955), UNM
Alumni Lettermen Annual Meeting, the All-University Breakfast, myriad reunions,
and the traditional Southwest Fiesta and Silent Auction before kickoff.
Albuquerque Celebrates Tricentennial
Happy 300th Birthday, Albuquerque!
Events for the Tricentennial started this April and will continue through
October of 2006. UNM’s celebration includes multiple events and
monthly themes. For example, September 2005 will be Architecture month
and will feature lectures sponsored by the School of Architecture and
Planning. October 2005 will promote sports, particularly UNM Homecoming.
Contact Eleanor Sanchez, the campus Tricentennial coordinator, with questions
at evsanch@unm.edu, for more information.
