Christmas
Break 1943
In 1943, UNM Christmas vacation
was just one day. Classes began
again on December 26. The
students themselves voted for
this because they wanted an
early spring graduation (no
commencement ceremony),
enabling the men to leave for
war.

Giving Thanks
We asked UNM administrators, faculty,
staff, and alumni to tell us what they’re grateful for this year.
Their answers—the rewards of higher education and the support of friends
and family—richly illustrate how much the UNM community is part of
our lives.
Homecoming a Rousing Luau Success
We hope you were a part of this
year’s “Lobo Luau.” Homecoming 2004 had a tropical
flair—class reunions, a Tiki Dance and campus-wide Luau celebrations,
tailgate parties, anniversary celebrations, and more. A week of over
50 Homecoming events wrapped up on October 23, as the Lobos
defeated the San Diego State Aztecs at home with a 19-9 win. We’re
especially proud that this year’s Alumni Association silent auction
raised over $10,000 for scholarships
and Alumni Association programs.

Congratulations, New Alumni!
Winter graduation takes place the evening of
Friday, December 17. Approximately 1,900 students will march in the ceremony
at the Pit and be recognized as graduates and alumni of the University
of New Mexico. UNM President Louis Caldera will preside over the occasion.
As well, convocation ceremonies will be held for individual schools, colleges,
and/or departments to honor their graduates. All December graduates are
invited to attend a reception in their honor hosted by President Caldera
and the Alumni Association on the south concourse of the Pit following
the graduation ceremony on December 17.
Lobo Athletics: Winners on the Field,
Court, and Beyond
Try to keep your eye on
fast-moving cross-country runner Matt
Gonzales, whose performance at the elite NCAA Mountain Regional Championships
helped extend the Lobos’ season. The New Mexico men were one of
four at-large teams selected out of the Mountain Region, marking the Lobos’
first trip to the national meet in 16 years. The Lobos Football team took
a November 20 win over Wyoming to close out their regular season with
an overall 7-4 record. Now it’s on to post-season play and a Bowl
bid. Check http://www.golobos.com
to learn when, where, and against what team the Lobos will play. All this
can only mean, of course, that men’s and women’s basketball
are shooting their way to MWC championships. GO

El Centro de la Raza Celebrates 35 Years
Founded in 1969, El Centro
has a long and successful history of working with and for students at
the University of New Mexico. On December 10, friends of El Centro will
gather to celebrate 35 years of helping UNM students reach their academic
goals.
