Welcome to The Howler
A bi-monthly e-newsletter for UNM alumni and friends,
dedicated to building friends for life with news, resources, and ways
to stay connected.
Then:
Hodgin Hall, left, built in 1892, was the first building on
the UNM campus. Hadley Hall, right, which housed the sciences,
was the second.

Hodgin Hall Dedicated to Alumni
As the new banners
flying on Hodgin Hall proudly declare, “Hodgin Hall—The
Right Place, The Right Time—For Alumni.”
On October 6, Hodgin Hall was dedicated to
the UNM alumni community in a celebration attended by President Caldera
and the many people who made this historic change possible after
more than a quarter century of steadfast effort. The event was hosted
by the UNM Alumni Association. UNM Alumni Association President Angie
Vachio made the presentation.
Hodgin Hall is now officially designated for
the use of the UNM Alumni Association. While we are especially grateful
today to President Caldera and Jamie Koch, president of the Board
of Regents, for making this dream a reality, there are also many
others we need to thank. Please take a moment to click on the full
story below, to learn more about the recognition so richly deserved
by our dedicated friends.
Our historic building stands at the heart
of our university’s
history and now will be preserved to serve alumni, students, and the
UNM community for many years to come. You can look forward to experiencing
a new home for exploring UNM’s history, a showcase for UNM art
and scholarship, and a gracious venue for meetings and receptions,
among other uses.
Homecoming 2005—Were
You There?

Not
even the disappointing fourth-quarter loss to the BYU Cougars
could dampen the excitement of Homecoming for the crowd of
over 39,000 in University Stadium. |
Hats Off for Disaster Response Team
The New Mexico Disaster
Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) is made up of a group of very talented individuals who pool their efforts to save lives during a disaster situation. Nearly 30 UNM team members and alumni from this specialized group responded to the Hurricane Katrina disaster in the Gulf Coast.
In testimony before a Senate committee, FEMA Public Information Officer Marty J. Bahamonde singled out the New Mexico DMAT for a job well done.
Many thanks to these dedicated volunteers for their service.
Go Lobos! Sports Round-Up
UNM's Homecoming loss to the BYU Cougars was disappointing, but brightened by sophomore QB Kole McKamey becoming the first Lobo to get 100 yards rushing and 100 yards passing in a game 3 times. Attendance at University Stadium is setting records, with several sell-out crowds so far this season. As of press time, the Lobos are one win away from being bowl eligible for the fifth straight season and an unprecedented fourth consecutive postseason game. Their record stands at 5-4, 3-3 MWC. Stay tuned!
Special mention to Senior DonTrell Moore, who on October 28 ran for two touchdowns and 117 yards on 19 carries to become the sixth player in NCAA Division I history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons.
STAND-OUT
SOCCER: The men's soccer team is ranked third in the nation in the most recent polls of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, College Soccer News, and Soccer Times. After a 19-game winning streak (snapped October 16), their record as of October 31 is 12-1-1 on the year; second place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 4-1-1 mark in league play. The women closed out the regular season with an even record of 6-6-4 and 3-3-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
Keep cheering all
our UNM athletes as they drive, kick, run, and swim toward MWC
championships.
GO LOBOS!
Athletic Hall of Honor Inductees
Congratulations to this year's Athletic Hall of Honor inductees, who represent excellence in inter-collegiate sports. These hard-playing individuals were recognized last month at the UNM Alumni Lettermen's Association's
annual awards ceremony. The group also proudly awarded 16 fifth-year scholarships, the largest number ever.
Congratulations, New Alumni!
Winter graduation takes place the evening
of Friday, December 16. Over 2,000 students will march in the ceremony
at the Pit and be recognized as graduates and alumni of the University
of New Mexico. UNM President Louis Caldera will preside over the
occasion. As well, convocation ceremonies will be held for individual
schools, colleges, and/or departments to honor their graduates. All
December graduates are invited to attend a reception in their honor
hosted by President Caldera and the Alumni Association on the south
concourse of the Pit following the graduation ceremony on December
16.
