In last month's Howl Back poll, we
asked, "When’s the busiest time
for weddings in the chapel?"
While Valentine's Day wins for
busiest day, half of you knew that
July is the busiest month, with
about three weddings a weekend. |

UNM’s
First Dorms
The University's first dormitories
were constructed in 1906.
Separate men and women's
dorms were built in the Spanish
Pueblo style of architecture that
President William Tight initiated
on the campus in 1905. The
dorms were given "Indian"
names and painted with Indian
symbols on the outside of the
buildings. The women's dorm
was named "Hokona," which
means "butterfly maiden." The
men's dorm was named
"Kwataka," which means
"man-eagle."

President Caldera Welcomes New Students
 |
Representing every state in
the U.S. as well from countries abroad, approximately 3,100 new students
came to campus this year—a new record! We wish them best of
luck with their academic and extracurricular endeavors. |
With pomp, some ceremony, but mostly just warm
smiles, this year's freshman class joined the UNM community at Freshman
Convocation, the first event of Freshman Family Day.
President Caldera and faculty members presided
over a full Popejoy Hall on August 22. In a stirring speech, President
Caldera challenged each student to take advantage of UNM's opportunities
and to "truly stretch yourself and immerse yourself in this experience."
After the ceremony, students and their families joined President Caldera
and faculty at the Duck Pond for a light-hearted afternoon of music and
food.
Freshman Programs Create Community
To help new students thrive
in their transition to college life, the Freshman Studies program offers
new students the chance to learn, explore, and live together. This year
students in Living Learning Communities will share a residence hall, participate
in a weekly one-credit seminar, and enroll in additional classes together.
Themes for the 2004 Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) include "The
Innocence of the Hip-Hop Culture" and "The Ins and Outs of College
Life.
Get Ready for Homecoming 2004!
Homecoming attracts thousands of alumni back
to campus each year—will you be one of them in 2004? Join us October
18-23 for a tropical Lobo Luau, class reunions, the Alumni Association
silent auction, and of course the big game!
Along with his 1954 classmates,
U.S. Senator Pete Domenici will mark 50 years of Lobo pride
and be inducted into the Heritage
Club.
This year UNM Health Services celebrates
a combined 250 years of excellence in service to New Mexico. Friends,
alumni and donors will be recognized at a gala evening. The Medical
School will note its 40th anniversary with a keynote address by
Dr. Cristina Beato, a member of the class of 1984 and Acting Assistant
Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services
Fall in New Mexico: Balloons, State
Fair, Green Chile
Fall in New Mexico means
gorgeous blue skies dotted with colorful balloons, carnival rides at the
State Fair, and most of all—chile roasts! At the balloon fiesta,
watch for the stork balloon, which is owned by UNM alumnus and state legislator
Dr. Steve Komadina.
Campus’ Great New Look
If you haven’t been on campus for a while, you’ll
be amazed at how great it looks! There are new buildings all over, including
the Welcome Center, residence halls, SUB, Dane Smith, Hibben, and Hart
Wing. The new Power Plant has increased capacity and makes us one of the
few campuses to generate our own power.
New Appointments Show Strength
and Experience
Among the new faces at
UNM this semester is four-time UNM alumnus Charles Crespy, who will serve
as dean of the Anderson Schools of Management. We also welcome David Harris
as executive vice president for the university and Carlos Rey Romero as
the new director of Government Affairs. Christopher Mead is the new dean
for the College of Fine Arts after serving as a professor at both Fine
Arts and the School of Architecture and Planning.
Vote For GO Bond Issue
on November 2!
Whether you vote
early, absentee, or in person on November 2, we hope
you’ll vote FOR the General Obligation Bond Issue "B"
for Education. When you do, you’ll be voting for:
 |
•
new Health Science Center labs and patient care equipment;
•
the new Centennial Engineering Building and manufacturing training
and technology equipment;
•
needed improvements in infrastructure, information technology, ADA,
libraries and public television; and
•
needed capital projects at each UNM branch campus. |
"Dinner for 12 Strangers"
Serves Up Friendship
Last spring's "Dinner
for 12 Strangers" events were rousing successes that brought together
12 students, faculty, and alums for an evening of conversation and great
food. The Alumni Association is looking for hosts for this semester's
dinners.
Fall Lobo Athletics Coming On Strong
Don't miss a chance to
cheer on your teams! Just in time for the start of the 2004 season, the
city of Albuquerque has donated bleachers for the south end of the stadium,
bringing capacity to over 40,000. There's plenty of room for you, friends,
and family to catch the Lobos live on the gridiron.
2004 Hall of Honor Inductees Recognized
On September 9, the UNM
Alumni Letterman’s Association recognized excellence in inter-collegiate
sports at their annual awards ceremony. The UNM Athletic Hall of Honor
perpetuates the mission of inter-collegiate athletics at the University
of New Mexico and preserves UNM's athletic history and traditions.
