HOMECOMING
"Heavy is the head
that wears a
crown."—and sometimes, hairy.
Perhaps as a joke, Sam Taggart,
a male, ran for and was
crowned Homecoming Queen
in 1970. The first Homecoming
King was
pre-med student
Steven F. Cordero in 1980.

President Caldera Welcomes
Alumni
In a special letter to our alumni community, President Caldera
welcomes all of us to join together in moving UNM into the future...starting
with Homecoming this October 3-8.
Homecoming 2005—Bigger
and Better
 |
This year’s
Homecoming theme of “Reflections: Honoring the Past, Building
the Future” couldn’t be more appropriate as we look back
in appreciation and forward to building another successful year. |
We’re looking forward to the annual Alumni
Faculty/Staff Appreciation luncheon, the Heritage Club Dinner (inducting
the Class of 1955), the UNM Alumni Lettermen Annual Meeting, the All-University
Breakfast where this year’s Zia Award recipients will be honored,
myriad reunions, and the traditional Southwest Fiesta and Silent Auction
before kickoff.
All leading up to the big game, when the Lobos
will crush the BYU Cougars on Saturday, October 8 at 6 p.m. (Go Lobos!)
One important way you can support Homecoming
is to join the Homecoming 100 Club. You’ll receive your choice of
either a pair of tickets to the UNM Homecoming football game or a limited
edition UNM Homecoming poster.
And for truly representing Lobo Spirit—with
friendship, optimism, and sheer inventiveness—we tip our hats
to one group of alumni who have been celebrating Homecoming together
for 30 years—with a place-kicker twist. This one has to be
read to be believed.
Reflections: New Freshmen and Golden
Grads
In the spirit of reflections, here are some
thoughts on life from our entering freshmen (class of 2011) and our Golden
Graduates (classes of 1955 and 1956).
Lobo Football—We’re Talking
Tailgates
When it’s two hours before kickoff,
where will you be? Hopefully, right next to some fellow alumni at one
of two tailgates sponsored by the Alumni Association this fall. The first
will be held October 1 at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth,
Texas. Don’t miss the first match-up of the Lobos and the Horned
Frogs since the formation of the Mountain West Conference.
The second tailgate will be at San Diego State,
against the Aztecs, on October 22.
These tailgates will start two hours before
game time, which will be determined about two weeks before the game by
the MWC.
Here on campus, the Lettermen’s
Association will
sponsor a tailgate party starting at 9 a.m. for the Lobos’ season
opener September 5 against UNLV. That game will be televised on
ESPN2 at 11 a.m. The Lettermen’s
Association will sponsor tailgates
at each home game, starting two hours prior to kickoff.
Bring On the Chile
Roasts
Nothing says home to chile-starved Lobos around
the country like a care package of green chile. That’s where your
regional alumni chapter comes to the rescue. From Atlanta to Los Angeles
to Chicago, there’s an upcoming chile roast near you. Last year,
the UNM Alumni Association shipped over seven
tons of green chile around the country. (And that’s
not all of it—some of our larger alumni chapters order their green
chile shipment directly from wholesalers.)
Here on campus, the Young
Alumni association will host a chile cook off on September 17 before the
game with New Mexico State.
Plus, a few recipes to
get your creative green chile juices going.
Get Digital with Continuing Education
 |
Continuing
Education at UNM announces new equipment and new offerings in
Digital Arts. Our graphic |
design, web design and multimedia programs have evolved
into a full spectrum Digital Arts curriculum to include filmmaking,
video/audio, animation and digital photography.
We can meet all the
training needs of the Digital Arts enthusiast, from the hobbyist with
a new digital camera, to the aspiring design professional or filmmaker
staying on top of the latest high-end software. We have courses for
those wanting to improve established careers as well as for those
just getting started.
Happy Anniversaries!
The Agora Crisis Center is the oldest student-run
crisis center in the nation and the only one serving New Mexico. We wish
them a happy 35th anniversary this year. Are you one of their 5,000 alumni
who trained to help your fellow students? They’d love to hear from
you.
Other UNM anniversaries we’ll be celebrating
at Homecoming include the College of Pharmacy (60th), the College of Nursing
(50th), and the School of Architecture (30th).
We Hear You
In the past two years of bringing you The Howler,
we’ve received some nice comments from you about how this e-newsletter
helps keep you in touch. Among other comments, you’ve thanked us for
spelling chile correctly. (As if there would be another way!) Most of all
you’ve helped us know that we’re on the right track.
