Representative Henry "Kiki" Saavedra
kikiThe UNM Alumni Association's Lobos for Legislation committee recognizes Representative Henry "Kiki" Saavedra as our 2006 UNM Alumni Association Higher Education Distinguished Legislator.

Throughout his 30-year tenure in the Legislature, Representative Saavedra has been a great UNM supporter. During the 2006 Legislative Session, Representative Saavedra's support for the University was extraordinary and exemplary.

Committee members requested input from a variety or sources and received consistent feedback that Representative Saavedra's efforts on UNM's behalf went "above and beyond" that of his peers.

Representative Saavedra's personal commitment to UNM led to his writing personal letters to all legislators and the governor asking them to keep the UNM funding provided in House Bill 2—the major funding package. In addition, he spoke with great passion for UNM funding on the house floor. Without reservation, the UNM Alumni Association applauds Representative Saavedra. This award includes a $500 UNM scholarship for Representative Saavedra to award to the UNM student of his choice.

The University of New Mexico Alumni Association Legislative Service Award

ciscoSenator Cisco McSorley:
First elected in 1986 as a State Representative, then elected to the State Senate, Senator McSorley has reached his 20-year anniversary in the New Mexico State Legislature.

His district includes the University of New Mexico. He has two UNM degrees and has been an avid supporter of UNM programs. We look forward to continuing to work with Senator McSorley for many years to come.

stellRepresentative Joe Stell:
Representing District 54, covering Eddy and Otero County, Representative Stell has been helping our state for 20 years. He is one of UNM's honored lifetime lettermen and has always been a UNM supporter. After 20 years, he has decided to retire from the legislature and we will sincerely miss him.

We honor them for their years of service representing the people of New Mexico and thank them for their work on behalf of our institution.
