Experiencing the American University Tradition
By Mary Conrad

Graduating this year with a biology major, Kenyan Fredrick James Efu-Awich, known as Efu, embraced wholeheartedly the American university experience. In turn, students and professors at UNM have embraced him for his determination, wit, and caring.

Only at an American university would Efu have helped found AFRICA—Africa’s Friends Reaching the International Community for Africa. The group emphasized outreach to campus and the community about various plights facing the African continent, e.g. AIDS, wars, and politics.

Only at an American university would Efu have helped found the Tau Sigma Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The fraternity is the first at UNM for African American students.

Only at an American university would Efu have been elected 2002 UNM Homecoming King. “Never before had I experienced such an American tradition,” he says. He launched a “rigorous” campaign to meet at least 10 new people a day. “Needless to say, I made a lot of friends that way.” Since his election, Efu says, more African American candidates have vied for the position.

A tutor for Athletics and African American Student Services, Efu is a frequent volunteer for community service, whether at a downtown foodbank or working with HIV patients.

Efu’s activities did not keep Efu from his studies. He graduates with a 3.62 GPA, was on the dean’s list and honor roll, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received an Amigo International Scholarship and an Enterprise Scholarship. He was also honored with the Dean Clauve Outstanding Seniors Award and the Fannye Irving-Gibbs Award.

While Efu’s plans point him toward pharmacy studies, he writes that he has “come to embrace the fact that, what lies behind me, and what lies before me are tiny matters compared to what lies in me.”
