Academics
- Student-athletes posted a school-record
3.05 GPA during the 2004 fall semester, the fifth consecutive
term the GPA has been at 3.02 or higher.
Overall
- A total of 14 sports represented at NCAA
postseason competition: men’s and women’s basketball,
men’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s
golf, skiing, men’s soccer, women’s swimming, men’s
and women’s tennis, men’s indoor track, men’s
and women’s outdoor track.
- Men’s and women’s basketball
won the postseason conference tournament in the same year for
the first time...both programs advanced to the NCAA Tournament
in same year for only the second time, the other year being 1997-1998.
Men’s
Basketball
- Won the Mountain West Conference Tournament
and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six
years.
- Senior Danny Granger was
named MVP of the MWC Tournament and an honorable mention All-America
by the Associated Press.
Women’s
Basketball
- Shared the MWC regular-season title for
the second straight season, won the Mountain West Conference Tournament
for the third consecutive year, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament
for the fourth season in a row.
- Don Flanagan was named
MWC Coach of the Year.
- Freshman Dionne Marsh was
named MWC Newcomer of the Year and MVP of the league tournament.
Men’s
Cross Country
- The Lobos placed ninth as a team at the
NCAA Championships.
- Senior Matt Gonzales placed
second and freshman Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott fourteenth
at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors.
Football
- Played in a third straight bowl game (Emerald
Bowl) for the first time in school history.
Finished 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the MWC.
Men’s
Golf
- Lobos won third straight MWC team title.
- Glen Millican named MWC
Coach of the Year.
Skiing
- The Lobos finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.
Men’s
Soccer
- Lobos ranked No. 1 in the nation for the
first time in school history.
- UNM advanced to the third round of the NCAA
Championship for the first time in program history.
- Jeremy Fishbein was named
national coach of the year by Soccer America magazine.
Women’s
Swimming
- Senior Becca Barras became
the Lobos’ first diving All-American, finishing fifteenth
in the 1-meter.
- Tracy Ljone named head
coach on May 5, replacing Bill Spahn who retired
after 24 years.
Women’s
Tennis
- Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic
named co-MWC Players of the Year.
Men’s
Indoor Track
- Senior Matt Gonzales finished
fourth in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Championships to grab
All-America honors.
