Homecoming Wrap-Up
By Sue MacEachen

Not even the disappointing fourth-quarter loss to the BYU Cougars could dampen the excitement of Homecoming for the crowd of over 39,000 in University Stadium. The traditional coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen at halftime ended a suspenseful week for its candidates. Tyler Tixier and Maralyn Beck were crowned by President Louis Caldera and his wife, Eva, while the student crowd erupted in cheers.

UNM celebrated its 80th homecoming during the week of October 3-8 as alumni, students and staff celebrated “Reflections: Honoring the Past, Building the Future.” Student activities began with their traditional chalk mural contest at the UNM Bookstore. UNM Young Alumni kicked off alumni activities with a happy hour celebration at a local establishment.
Alumni Association President Angie Vachio greeted more than 250 alumni at the annual Appreciation Luncheon for alumni who serve as faculty and staff. The winners of the 4th annual Campus Decorating Contest were announced with Special Programs/CEP taking top honors with their reflections of UNM’s past and future, including potential galactic UNM branches.

The traditional Heritage Club Dinner, honoring alumni who graduated from the University 50 or more years ago, was hosted Thursday evening at the Albuquerque Petroleum Club. The Class of 1955 was invited back to campus and inducted into this prestigious group.

Friday was one of the busiest days on campus with a variety of events scheduled for both students and alumni. The Class of 1955 met for brunch at the Student Union Building and reminisced over memory books presented to each member in attendance. The students kicked into high gear with a pep rally and continuation of the annual Cherry/Silver Games. Over 20 alumni reunions kicked off later in the evening including a combined Alumni Reunion reception held in the SUB. Alumni and students then convened after the reunions for the “Howlin’ in Hollywood” Dance.

The traditional All University Breakfast was packed again this year as more than 150 alumni and guests gathered early Saturday morning to honor recipients of the Zia Awards and the Lobo Award presented by Mortar Board. This year’s Zia Award recipients included Jim Belshaw, Briggs Cheney, Michelle Coons, Michelle Lujan Grisham, Lynda Lovejoy, and Waneta Tuttle. The illustrious Lobo Award went to The Honorable M. Christina Armijo, US District Judge. Alumni and fans showed their Lobo spirit by attending the annual Tailgate and Silent Auction before the UNM vs. BYU football game. The Silent Auction was once again a huge success, raising over $13,000 to support the UNM Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and Programs.
