Reflecting on the Past and Looking Forward

We asked new freshmen what they hope to learn from their future UNM experience. Here are their reflections looking forward:

I hope to build a sense of community and belonging.
—Jesse Lepluart

I hope to redefine myself, grow up, and learn.
—Indica Murillo

I hope to become an independent and more responsible person.
—Sarai Perez

I hope to become more independent and take challenging classes (including ceramics).
—Nallely Rodriguez

And from our Golden Graduates, here are reflections from the past 50 years and the most important lessons they learned at UNM:

How much there is to know, and how much I have to learn.
—Connie Alexander, ’54 BA, Albuquerque, radio and TV announcer

Friends are great and the good ones last.
—Millie Marshall Barnhart, ’55 BSED, ’71 MA, Albuquerque

Never stop learning. Keep your mind open to new ideas. Keep reaching.
—Gary Beals, ’55 BABA, Phoenix

Practice doesn’t necessarily lead to perfection—but it sure helps!
—Jo Margaret Gore Farris, ’54 BFA, Albuquerque, violinist

Never give up!
—Jerome Giles, ’55 BSEE, Albuquerque

Being independent and thinking for oneself is very important. In spite of the McCarthy era, I determined to make my decisions based on my values, not on what some might think of those, 20 years later.
—Marietta Brown Miller, ’55 BAMU, Albuquerque

Not to pre-judge any issue. Consider both sides before making your decision.
—Wilkie Miller, ’55 BSIE, Midland, Texas, finance director
