The most important part of the Lobos for Legislation program is your participation.
Here are some ways you can help be an advocate for The University of New Mexico.
• Build and maintain a personal/ professional relationship with local lawmakers to convey the message of the University of New Mexico's legislative priorities.• Engage local community leaders in discussions about the importance and impact of higher education in your area. Promote and enhance the university through grassroots networking.
• Take action! A program of this nature requires immediate attention in response to legislative action in order to be effective.
Although a volunteer, you must be willing when asked to take action immediately!
Actions include: writing, phoning, e-mailing, or visiting lawmakers in their home districts or in Santa Fe.
• Interact with other citizens — UNM's best publicity is through word of mouth.
• Seek out candidates During election years, Lobo Links are encouraged to seek out candidates and discuss higher education issues and General Obligation Bond — GO Bond — needs.
• React and mobilize to sudden "calls to action" when called or e-mailed by the UNM Alumni Association Lobos for Legislation program.
• Communication is the key to success between the Lobo Link and the legislator on a year-round basis. Updates are essential!
• Register to vote and VOTE!
• Host legislators at various events such as receptions, cultural, and sporting events.
• Identify and recruit prominent Lobos in leadership positions to help our cause.
• Attend the UNM Alumni Association Legislative annual briefing/workshop and Legislator Appreciation Reception which are held annually for alumni and interested advocates.
Current issues and the top priorities of the university are discussed and a social event is planned to interact with the legislators.
• Stay abreast of legislative issues affecting higher education.
Communicate with the Lobos for Legislation staff about your contact with the legislator.
Fill out the legislator tracking form and send it to us by mail or fax, or telephone us to let us know about your e-mail message.
