Phoning Your Legislator

Telephone contact may be the most sensible form of communication due to the timing of calls to action.

If you do not know the direct line of your legislator, call the Capitol switchboard numbers:

The House: 505.986.4285
Ask to be connected.

The Senate: 505.986.4281
Ask to be connected.

Suggestions for making effective contact via telephone:

Be Prepared

Be sure to have the appropriate information in front of you, such as the bill number or subject matter and be familiar with the key points of your position.

Follow-up with the Legislator

Once you have had a phone conversation with the legislator, send a follow-up note re-stating the University's position and thanking them for his/her consideration.
When appropriate, send the staff a thank you note as well.

Communicate with the Lobos for Legislation staff about your contact with the legislator.

Fill out the legislator tracking form and send it to us by mail or fax, or telephone us to let us know about your e-mail message.
