Rene Matison graduated from the UNM College of Education with a BS degree in May of 1969. He was drafted in the US Army from 1970-1971. He earned a four-year Letterman in Track and Field, a two-time All-American in Track and Field and a one-year Letterman in Football. In 1969, Rene was the 13th round draft choice for the Dallas Cowboys, and in 2009 he was inducted into UNM Letterman's Hall of Honor.
Rene has over 30 years’ experience in the field of Human Resources, specializing in Labor Relations. His management experience consists of functioning in the positions of: Child Protective Officer, Clark County, Las Vegas, Nevada; Assist Labor Relations Manager for the Hughes Hotels and Casinos, Las Vegas Nevada; Labor Relations Manager, Merck, Sharp and Dome, Rahway, New Jersey; Human Resources Manager, Merck, Sharp and Dome, Rahway, New Jersey; and Director, Human Resources, JM Huber in San Diego, Calif. In 2006, Rene retired.
Rene has 13 years as a youth coach for track and field, soccer and basketball. He is a life-time board member for the Elementary Institute of Science, San Diego, Calif., as well as a ZEAL Coordinator (Zest for Excellence in Athletics and Learning) for the mentoring program under the Office of African American Student Services. Rene is the treasurer of the New Mexico Buffalo Soldiers Motor Cycle Club, committed to community support and teaching our youth about the rich history of the Buffalo Soldiers. He is also a youth track and field official for Albuquerque Public Schools.
