The UNM Alumni Washington DC Chapter will host the 2018 Lobo Day Brunch at Ft. Belvoir Officer's Club. The annual meeting is at 10:30 a.m., with the brunch to follow at 11 a.m. The featured speaker will be Dr. Christopher Witt, associate professor in the Department of Biology and Curator of Birds at the Museum of Southwestern Biology of the University of New Mexico.

Witt's scientific research discovered how the smallest birds on the planet take in and expel oxygen and how they adapt genetically to thinner air. His documentary, "Super Hummingbirds", aired on PBS Nature, and examined how altitude and various air pressures affect their behaviors.

More on Dr. Witt:

Witt uses museum specimens to study biogeography and evolution of birds, with a geographic focus on the Andes and the southwestern USA. His research approaches include comparative genomics, physiology, phylogenetics and parasitology. Witt has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles. Witt received his PhD in 2004 from Louisiana State University and conducted his postdoctoral work at UC-Berkeley (2005-06), before starting at UNM in 2007.
