Austin Chapter Lobo Day

Austin-area alumni are invited to help the UNM Alumni Austin Chapter celebrate UNM's 129th birthday at the chapter's annual Lobo Day event! The chapter is pleased to announce the Lobo Day speaker is Dr. Horton E. Newsom, UNM Research Professor in Earth and Planetary Sciences. We will take a collection for a donation to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

About Dr. Newsom:

Dr. Newsom is a geologist and geochemist with more than 40 years of experience with planetary science, including work on meteorites, the origin and composition of the Earth and Moon, and the study of terrestrial impact craters around the world and their hydrothermal systems. Dr. Newsom has been involved with landing site selection for several past Mars missions, including the Mars Exploration rovers, and the Mars Science Laboratory, and is currently working on site selection for the Mars 2020 Rover and future human landing sites.

He is currently a science team member for the Mars Science Laboratory, Curiosity, and is co-investigator on the rover's ChemCam Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument. Dr. Newsom is actively involved with the daily operations of Curiosity, including planning science observations, and publication of the results.

Parking: Guests must park in the free parking lot east of the Ronald McDonald House. If you take a parking garage ticket, bring that in for validation. Guests can also use the parking lot south of the Ronald McDonald House, however, Ronald McDonald House is NOT able to validate parking for this garage.
