Gwinn "Bub" Henry
An Abiding Love for Sports, Lobos, and UNM
by Mary Conrad
Charismatic, passionate, and positive: Bub Henry was all of those things, usually all three at once, and particularly when it came to UNM. To say Bub loved UNM is an understatement. His son Mark told the Albuquerque Journal that he never knew anyone who loved the University more.
Born in Columbia, Missouri, he came to Albuquerque when his father was hired by UNM as a football coach. Bub attended UNM, moved to Oklahoma for a while to run an auto dealership then returned to Albuquerque and got a job at UNM as a games and recreation manager. Later he became the director of alumni relations and later as the Director of Hodgin Hall. Bub enjoyed a 30-year career at UNM. He had a passion for Lobos sports, especially track and field.
In the mid-1970s, Bub launched a campaign to save and then renovate Hodgin Hall. The building was reopened in 1982. Bub has received numerous awards from the UNM Alumni Association: The Alumni Award of Distinction, the Lobo Award, the Erna S. Fergusson Award, and the Letterman’s Association Hall of Honor Distinguished Service Award. He amassed a large collection of UNM sports memorabilia over the decades and donated it to the Letterman’s Room in the Alumni Center at Hodgin Hall in 1986.
