Capt. Bryan Lopez

Naval officer Honored

by Mary Conrad

Navy Capt. Bryan Lopez, executive officer of Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) was honored recently at the annual Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., October 7, 2011.

The Military Luminary Award was presented to Lopez in recognition of his contributions to the Hispanic technical community as both a leader and role model.

Lopez, who hails from Las Cruces and is a University of New Mexico alumnus, began his career in the Navy as a seaman and rose through the ranks to captain. He recently spoke about his passion for mentoring and inspiring young people.

"My own success is attributable to the many opportunities the Navy offers for advanced education and leadership and to those leaders over the years who took time out of their own busy lives to help guide and mentor me to success," Lopez reflected. "Today, my greatest satisfaction comes from 'giving back' by providing similar mentoring to young people seeking guidance."

HENAAC award winners were recognized for their talented academic and professional contributions to the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and the role models they represent to Hispanic students seeking to pursue related degrees and careers.

As the Navy's Information Systems Dominance Command, SPAWAR has a robust STEM program that focuses on building networks within academia, government and industry communities to increase awareness regarding the importance of improving the scientific and technological literacy, and competitiveness of the nation's students.
