The UNM Alumni Association is proud to announce the winner of the inaugural Homecoming Poster Artwork Contest as UNM student Kathleen Coucke.
About the Artist
Coucke is a visual artist. Primarily a painter and printmaker working towards her bachelor’s degree in art in art studio, with a minor in arts management at The University of New Mexico. A lifelong New Mexican, Coucke says she loves to spend her time here with her husband, creating art and trying to connect with the community. She draws much of her inspiration from real life in nature, including animals, landscapes and flowers. She is also interested in making art that tells stories.
About the Painting
Of “Desert Hillscape” Coucke says: “This piece is an acrylic painting inspired by New Mexico. When I think of my home, I think of rolling hills, warm sand, blue sky and mountains going on for miles in a vast landscape. I’ve always been interested in the layers I see when I look at the landscape and how it related to the layers that form a painting. Another thing I feel is important about this painting and about New Mexico is it’s uniquely subtle but warm desert color palette. I wanted to portray the glowing hills with a contemporary flair. The simplistic gestural lines embody what I love about New Mexico. I have an interest in how everything has a natural flow and movement together in the environment as well as a balance of color and texture. Most of all, this painting simply demonstrates the personality I feel New Mexico has.” “Desert Hillscape” is an 18 x 24 print.
