Thanks to the gifts from alumni, friends, and chapters, the UNM Alumni Association assists top UNM students with their academic expenses. Alumni Association scholarships are available to undergraduate and graduate students at UNM. Scholarships are awarded using a variety of factors such as academic achievement, community involvement, employment experiences, areas of study, financial need and several others. Scholarship amounts may change annually.

- I am a senior in high school entering UNM in the fall. Can I apply for a scholarship(s)?
NO. Unfortunately incoming freshmen at UNM cannot qualify for a scholarship through the Alumni Association until they are sophomores or above. We encourage all incoming freshmen to contact the UNM Scholarship Office website at http://scholarship.unm.edu/ for information on additional scholarship opportunities.
- I am senior at UNM, and am planning to graduate in the fall. Do I still qualify for the scholarship(s)?
NO. It is a requirement that the student be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) for both the spring and fall semesters. Unfortunately if you are scheduled to graduate during the fall semester, you will not be eligible to apply.
- Are the scholarships open to transfer students from CNM or other institutions?
YES. As long as a student has completed 26 credit hours at another institution and will be considered a sophomore (or above) upon enrollment at UNM, you will qualify for the scholarships.
- Can international students apply for the Alumni Association scholarship(s)?
- How do I prove I meet the "financial need" requirement?
It must be clearly stated in the personal statement provided with the application. A brief description of your personal situation and how you are paying for school, what type of financial assistance you receive (if any) and how this scholarship can help you to pay for school-related expenses is sufficient.
- I have applied for a Master's program at UNM for the fall semester and have not received a response as to whether or not I was accepted into the program. Am I eligible to apply for the graduate scholarship(s).
YES. It is important to indicate that you are waiting for an acceptance letter from the graduate school/program in your statement. In order to release the funds to a recipient's account, all eligibility must be met and is reviewed prior to funds being disbursed into a student's account. Therefore, if you do not get accepted into the program, the scholarship money will go to the alternate.
- If applying for more than one scholarship, do I need to submit multiple personal statements?
NO. One statement is fine. However, please note that if the scholarships require different criteria (i.e. academic achievement, community service and/or financial need) please make sure to indicate how you meet each requirement in your personal statement.
- What type of resume should be included in my application?
Please submit your resume in the fields provided by the online application. If applying for a scholarship that requires outstanding campus or community involvement, service or leadership, indicate your activities in your resume. The selection committee looks very closely at your personal statement, so concentrate more on that than your resume. If you have received any scholarships at UNM, please list them, along with the dates and amount received.
- Is there a form that should be used for letters of recommendation?
YES. Your letters of recommendation need to be submitted via our online form. Contact those writing your recommendations ahead of time to verify they will be able to do so and to confirm their email address. You will enter their name and email address in your scholarship application. Once you have submitted your application, a link to the recommendation form will be sent to the email addresses you have provided. Verify with your reference that they have received the link. If not, please contact us.
- Does the scholarship application require an official transcript?
NO. A copy of your unofficial transcript (as of Jan. 2016) is fine. You will be required to upload your transcript when you fill out your application. For instructions on receiving your UNM advisement transcript via email or in person, visit Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS). If you have multiple transcripts from multiple schools, please combine your transcripts into one pdf file that you can upload with your application. (25 MB max file size.)
- Can my scholarship application be e-mailed?

- Personal Statement (500 words or less)
A statement outlining education goals, financial need (if applicable), campus involvement and demonstrated personal philosophy on leadership and civic engagement. Include information or comments that address the criteria listed for the scholarship(s) for which you are applying.
A list of your campus and community involvement. Include dates, titles/roles, leadership positions, description of duties and/or the details of your involvement. If you have received any scholarships at UNM, please list them, along with the dates and amount received. You must submit your resume online through the scholarship application.
- Two (2) Letters of Recommendation
You should contact those writing your recommendation letters to verify they will be able to do so and also confirm their email address. You will enter their name and email address in the online application. From there we will contact your references with further information on submitting their recommendations through a secure online link. It is your responsibility to ensure that your Scholarship Application receives all of your recommendations by the application deadline.
Hints for completing your application
- Prepare your documents
BEFORE you begin the online application, we recommend that you finalize your current resume and your personal statement, confirm two (2) references and their email addresses, and obtain one (1) unofficial copy of your transcript. If you have multiple transfer transcripts from multiple schools, combine them into one pdf file. (25 MB maximum file size)
- Complete the application in full
You can give yourself a competitive advantage by reading the directions carefully. If you have questions, contact Jane Algermissen at 505-277-9085 or by email at email@example.com. Get your questions answered directly rather than guess what is needed. Provide all documentation that is required. Complete the entire application. Do not leave any questions blank or unanswered. Be honest and be yourself in answering all questions.
- Show how you meet the criteria
Scholarship criteria varies. Be sure that you demonstrate how you meet the criteria. Do not assume that the selection committee will know you meet the criteria just because you are applying for the scholarship.
- Meet your deadlines
Give your application the time, attention, and preparation it deserves. Don’t wait until the last minute. Your transcript needs to be uploaded at the time you submit your application. Make sure your references will have ample lead-time to write their recommendation. Your completed application and all supporting materials must be received by the UNM Alumni Association by Friday, March 4, 2016, 5:00 p.m. MST for consideration. Late applications are not considered.
- Get the appropriate Letter of Recommendation
You should contact those writing your recommendations to verify they will be able to do so and to confirm their email address. You will be providing their email addresses in the application form. Once you have submitted your application, a link to the recommendation form will be emailed to those you have selected. Tell your references what the letter is for and provide information so that he/she can write an appropriate letter. Ask persons who can discuss your academic/extracurricular/work experiences, not just friends, neighbors, or relatives who know you as a nice person. Be sure to tell your references the deadline for submitting the letter is Friday, March 4, 2016, 5:00 p.m. MST.

A simple thank you note indicating that you appreciate the financial assistance in furthering your education goes a long way.
